www.skidrive.com evolved from the Ski Drive books, published by Paul Youden in the 1990’s which focused on taking the car to the Alps. SkiDrive was bought out by the late Aubrey Fielder and Celia Fielder in 2004 and is being expanded to include fly-drive to Europe and to the USA.

Aubrey Fielder was an Olympic cross country skier representing Great Britain in the Winter Games of 1956 at Cortina d’Ampezzo. On leaving the Army, he was Secretary General of the British Ski Federation between 1984 and 1986, and represented skiing on the British Olympic Association.  He died in August 2005 as a result of a brain tumour.

Celia Fielder learned to ski in Scotland at the age of 12 when one had to walk four miles from Glenmore Lodge to reach the slopes. There was one short rope tow! In 1991 she took over Editorship of the Army Winter Sports Association’s yearbook, transforming it over seven years from black and white into a full colour glossy publication. After a three year gap, the magazine was renamed Snow & Ice. Celia also edits the Army’s annual golf magazine, Through the Green.

Celia and Aubrey were among the early pioneers of skiing in the States, promoting the resorts in Ski Year. Within the last decade, the popularity of skiing across the Atlantic has soared, with skiers preferring to make their own independent arrangements. Fly-drive offers skiers the opportunity to sample several ski areas within close proximity. Nowhere is this easier than in America, whether it be the East or West Coast, Colorado or Utah. The Fielders have skied over 50 different ski areas within the States, each with their own particular charm and character, so are well qualified to advise on the most suitable resort for skiers of whatever ability.

The skidrive.com website has been upgraded and redesigned to comply with the current legislation for disabled users. At the click of the mouse, you can access all the information you might need for your drive across Europe or America – speed limits, fuel costs, where to stay en route, cross channel information, lo-cost flights, car hire firms, currency details, insurance requirements, snow tyres, chains, suggested itineraries. Fuel and currency rates are updated regularly, as are snow reports. New resorts and information is added immediately it is received at our offices.

We aim to make your journey as trouble-free as possible. Fly drive has enabled the flexible independent skier to pop over to Europe for the weekend, or a three-day midweek break at remarkably low rates. America need not necessarily be an expensive option either. Petrol costs are very low and motels, away from the main ski resorts, very inexpensive. We aim to reintroduce and encourage the spirit of adventure!
